Review: SMOK Stick V8 Kit

When I first started vaping I started with an Ego-T kit. Pretty basic stuff, with no power adjustment or anything like that on the battery. Not long after I started I remember those spinner batteries was released where you could twist the bottom to adjust the output voltage. Don't think I had many of those cause I soon moved on to mech mods and genesis atomizers, and then, in time I decided to try out some of the many regulated box mods that started to hit the market. I still mainly use regulated devices in all different shapes and sizes, except tube shaped ones. When I think of it it has been ages since I used a tube shaped mod or battery. So I guess it's about time I try one then.

Quite a lot of these kits with tube shaped batteries have been released lately.
They've got just one button, no power adjustment, just 5 clicks to turn on or off. Many of them are quite big as well, like 22-25 mm diameter, and some come with pretty crazy sub-ohm tanks in the kit as well. Kind of like an ego battery on steroids... with bad-ass tanks and with a normal 510 connection. Come to think of it, the 5 click on/off and the basic shape is probably what is left of the Ego heritage. The SMOK Stick V8 Kit that I'm reviewing today is one of those kits. It's name makes you think of big ass car engines... so you'll expect some serious power from this, right?

Look and feel

The kit comes in 7 different colors as far as I know. I've got the black one, which I think looks pretty good. Personally I could use the red and the silver one as well. The whole kit feels pretty solid, no button rattling at all and the airflow control and top filling is nice and smooth. Not too loose and not to tight. Overall a nice looking tube-style kit that seems to be pretty well built.

In use

The kit is indeed very easy to use. The mod has only one button and the standard 5 clicks to turn it on and off. It is also supposed to have an intelligent battery indicator system that according to the Smok website will have the ring around the fire button flash 4 times whenever you take a puff and then 15 times once your battery is below 3.3V and it's time to charge. Mine just lights up when I take a puff though. However, if I unscrew the tank it will blink 4 times once I hit the button. Not quite sure how this is supposed to indicate how much battery I have left, maybe the speed of the flashing or something like that. Now I've had limited opportunities to do more testing on this, as the battery seems to last me the whole day anyway.

The tank of course has the swivel action top fill system that we know from all the TFV tanks, which works great. Easy to refill on the go with no risk of fumbling and loosing your top-cap in the toilet or something stupid like that. Not that this has ever happened to me. The airflow control is nice and smooth, and the tank is easy to take apart for cleaning and changing coils. I've had some minor leaking issues right after refilling though. Not quite sure what to do about it, but it's not a huge problem. Only happens if I fill it and then leave it without vaping a bit on it before I put it away.

Performance

This thing performs pretty damn good to be honest. The battery output depends on the current state of the battery and is supposed to range from 4.2 to 3.4 V. Then there is also a 20A continuous discharge limit and it is supposed to give you 30-45W according to ... the internet. All this, again according to the internet, is called smart mechanical style output, which I don't really have the exact details on and I haven't done any testing either. What I do know ... is that the battery delivers a perfect amount of power for the included V8 Baby-M2 Core coils that are supposed to be designed for this output system. You'll get a lot of vapor and great flavour from this setup, and the battery time is awesome. It lasts me all day, at least now when I can't vape inside at work any more. 

The 0.15 Ohm head will give you bigger clouds, obviously, and the 0.25 is supposed to give you more flavour. I haven't really tested the flavour head to head, as I've used the two heads with different juices, but it makes sense. I have to say I am impressed and a bit surprised by how great this kit performs both when it comes to flavour and vapor.

Conclusion

Again... I'm impressed with the power, performance and flavour of this kit. It's also quite nice to vape on a tubed shaped device for a change, as it is a bit more handy than the box mods I usually carry around. You get a lot of fun for your money (NOK 429,00 at nosmoke.no) with the Stick V8 kit, so if you're looking for a powerful, flavourful and extremely easy to use kit I recommend you give this a try.

Juice Review: Mount Baker Vapor flavour concentrates, Part 2

It's time for the second of my Mount Baker Vapor concentrates reviews. The last weeks I've been vaping on five new juices mixed up from the concentrates that dampevarer.no sent me, curious to find out if any of them could beat my favourite from part 1, Thug Juice.

Caramel candy

Tested on: Steamcrave Aromamizer Plus (Dual fused claptons @ 0.16 ohms, 100 watts)

I've never been completely satisfied with the caramel flavours I've vaped so far, so I was kind of excited to see if Mount Baker could be the one that finally got it right. By the look of the picture they've chosen to illustrate this juice it seems that they're aiming to replicate a caramel fudge candy, and they're not that far from making it. I also feel they are just as close to hard caramel candy (like Werther's Original). Try to imagine a mix of the two. It's a good juice, pretty sweet stuff that might be a bit to sweet for an all day vape but more like a juice you'd vape with a cup of coffee.

Hawk sauce

Tested on: Steamcrave Aromamizer V2 (Dual claptons @ 0.4 ohms, 70 watts)

The only fruit juice in this part of my Mount Baker review series sure sounds tempting. Melon, berries and a touch of mint. And it delivers. This one is really great if you ask me and the description is spot on so no need for me to elaborate on that. I was afraid that the mint would be overpowering, but it's not at all. It a very subtle sweet mint that is perfectly balanced with the melon and berries. I can't really tell what berries, but it goes really well with the melon. Great juice.

555

Tested on: TFV8 Big Baby Beast (0.25 ohms, Smok Stick V8)

I've never been a big fan of these artificial tobacco flavours. When it comes to tobacco flavours I tend to favour the more realistic steeped N.E.T juices. However, this one was quite good. I mean I wasn't instantly convinced but I've been vaping it for a while now and it's growing on me. Not sure I would call it an authentic tobacco flavour, but it's a sweet flavour, with quite a lot of tobacco notes and quite a lot of caramel in there as well. To be totally honest it's not the kind of juice that I'd go buy, but I know quite a lot of 555 versions exist and quite a lot of people like them. If you're one of those, you probably shouldn't miss this one.

Cinnamon roll

Tested on: Geekvape Ammit (Ni80/Kanthal Clapton @ 0.8 ohms, 30-35 watts)

This one smells absolutely delicious... and it tastes equally delicious. The first thing that came to my mind was the cinnamon rolls that they used to sell in the cafeteria by our local skiing resort close to where I live. When I grew up those were almost as important a reason to go there as the skiing, and they were drenched in frosting. I was really looking forward to trying this one, having smelled it when I mixed it... and I was not at all disappointed. Delicious!

Butterscotch

Tested on: Vaporesso Guardian tank (0.5 ohms, 30 watts)

Not to sure about this one to be honest. I mean it's not a bad tasting juice, I could probably vape it all day, but I feel it doesn't quite have enough taste. The butterscotch is there, but there should be more of it. Not my favourite I have to say, but then again I haven't really tasted a butterscotch juice that I've been completely satisfied with.

I'm really not sure which one to pick as a favourite among these five. It's either the cinnamon roll or the hawk sauce, but they are two completely different flavour types so it's hard to say that one is better than the other. Guess it depends on what I'm in the mood for, so I'll just stick with putting them both in the top three so far in addition to the Thug Juice from part 1.

Quite a few of Vaporessos mods have pretty unique looks I'd say, and the Target mods are no exception. Both the Pro and the Mini versions comes in at least 5 different colors, some of which I would not use publicly under any circumstances. But others look pretty cool, and luckily the Mini Kit provided for this review was the silver/stainless steel version, which I think is one of the best looking ones.

Look and feel

The Target mod, and the mini version I've got here, does have somewhat of a futuristic look, which I think is kind of cool. It's a way to differentiate itself from other mods. There is quite a lot of button rattle though, especially on the fire button. Not something I think about whenever I pick it up, but it does make it feel a bit cheaper than it could have felt, cause other than that both the tank and the mod feels pretty solidly built. The looks of the tank is quite nice as well. Nothing too fancy. When it comes to the 5 colors it comes in, I could have used 4 of them... guess the pink one is aimed at the ladies.

In use

Starting with the mod, it's pretty straight forward in use, and quite simple. Charge port is on the bottom. Personally I prefer it on the side so you can charge while it's standing straight up. Not a problem if you're using it with the Guardian tank that comes in the kit, cause that one does not leak any way you put it down, but some atties can leak if you leave them sideways for a longer period of time.

The menu system is very easy to use. There's a + and a - button for adjusting either wattage or temperature depending on what mode you're in, and there is a button below for selecting the mode. This one needs to be held down for a while to cycle between the different modes (Watt, Ni TC, SS TC, Ti TC and two configurable TC modes). You can also flip the screen upside down (or the other way around if you like) by holding down the + and - at the same time for a while. Those of you who have read some of my previous reviews will probably remember that I'm not a big fan of TC. I mean I don't mind it, I just prefer wattage mode. That said, I believe the SS TC works as intended. This is the only TC mode I've tested as the coils that comes with the tank are both SS coils.

The mod seems to have pass through functionality in a way, which means you are able to use it while charging. I don't think it charges while you press the button though since you need to give it a couple of minutes before you can vape it if the battery was dead when you plugged it in.

When it comes to the tank, this one is also quite straight forward in use, once you've managed to see the tiny writing on the the little piece on to that your drip-tip goes into that tells you that you need to twist it clockwise to unscrew it from the top cap (which needs to be done before you can unscrew the top-cap). The top-cap on mine is pretty tight so I need to use quite a lot of force to unscrew it (which is done counter-clockwise). Once you've got the top cap and the drip-tip piece back on you can twist the top cap clockwise to adjust the airflow. You can either make the big airhole a bit smaller or you can twist it even further to reveal two even smaller holes for you MTL vaping needs. You need to use quite a lot of force to adjust the air flow as well. To be totally honest I'm not that happy with this top filling mechanism. You need to unscrew two pieces to fill which is ... well one more than on most tanks, and you shouldn't be bothered to use that much force to adjust air flow and unscrew the top cap to fill it. Once you get the top cap off though, it's easy to fill with big holes for your juice and changing the coil head is quite straight forward.

Performance

The flavour and vapor production that the Guardian tank gives you is pretty good to be honest. Nice, crisp flavour and decent vapor production. It's no RTA, but very nice for a sub-ohm tank. There's plenty of air for direct lung hits if you have the air flow fully open, and you can use it as a mouth to lung tank if you prefer that.

The mod seems to deliver the wattage... in a way. I've only tested it against a DNA200 device, both set to 30 watts, just to see how it feels. It does feel like the DNA200 gives you more power, which could be explained by the fact that the DNA200 measures the resistance to 0.56 Ohms while the Target ways 0.43. Quite a bit difference there. The DNA200 costs quite a lot more. Anyway, assuming that the DNA200 is pretty accurate (it should be at that price), I'd say that the resistance measurements on the Target could have been better. Then again, crank up the watts a bit more on the Target and you get pretty good results on that one as well. It delivers more than enough power for the Guardian tank.

 Conclusion

Now despite the cons I've mentioned in this review, I do like Target Mini Vape kit quite a bit. It's small, does not leak at all and have a decent battery, making it a really nice kit to bring along on a night out or on short trips out and about. Battery life is better than both my COV Mini Volt and Nugget, and it does provide you with nice clean flavour on your short trips and nights out. (NOK 599,- at friskedrag.no)

Review: Ammit RTA by GeekVape

GeekVape has put quite a few successful atties on the market by now but sadly I haven't been able to try any of them out yet. The Tsunami RDAs, the Avocado RDTAs and the Griffin RTAs and in different sizes and versions are all praised classics by now I guess, as well as the Eagle sub-ohm tank. But they are also putting out new interesting atties like the Peerless RDA, the Medusa RDTA and not to forget the subject of this review, the Ammit RTA, which is a single coil RTA aimed at the flavour chasers.

Look and feel

The Ammit comes both in black and stainless steel. I think it looks pretty good in both versions to be honest. Guess it depends on what you like best and what mod you plan to power it with. Build quality seems pretty good with nice smooth threading on the top filling and a nice clicky airflow control. The juice flow control on mine is damn tight though, not sure why. I've seen other video reviews of the Ammit where this also seems pretty nice and smooth. But overall it looks good with "Ammit" and a crocodile head (Ammit was a demon in ancient Egyptian relition with a crocodile head) printed on the chamber section on the inside.

In use

As I said, top filling is nice and smooth, and it has nice big kidney shaped fill holes. Works like a charm. Taking the atty apart for cleaning is also pretty easy, but you can't really take the bottom section apart as far as I know, which makes it a bit more time consuming to clean.

With any atty that has the airflow coming in from the bottom there is always a risk of some leaking, but I've not had any problems on this one. When turning the nice and clicky airflow control ring I can get a bit of juice on my fingers but no real leaks and no problem at all for me. The juice flow control, as I said is pretty damn tight on mine but that haven't been a big problem as I'm not using it actively anyway, I don't even bother closing it when filling. What I use to do with bottom airflow, top filling atties is to turn them upside down when I screw the top cap back on after filling. Not at once of course, but once you feel the resistance of the o-ring that seals the top cap, turn it upside down and screw it all the way down. This way the pressure that is created inside the tank by the top cap pressing down will only push air out from the juice flow holes rather than juice and you avoid leaking.

Then we have ... the build-deck. That is where the magic happens in this atty. First of all, this is a pure single-coil atty. It has a pretty unique airflow system that GeekVape calls 3D airflow. As you see from the pictures, there is air coming from the underneath the coil, but in addition to this you have the three extra air holes that blows air from the side onto the coil as well. The build deck is really easy to build on, and to wick. I'm not sure about the diameter of the post holes but fitting a 26/32 fused clapton in there is no problem at all and there is room for even thicker wires. When wicking it I've just pulled the cotton down the side and cut it so it reaches the juice holes on the outside and then gently just pushed it into the wells on each side so it covers the holes nicely. You really don't need much cotton to make this atty work and wick really well.

Speaking of wicking however, I was told that you shouldn't use to high VG juice on this one. I think the thickest juice I have is 60/40 VG/PG and I've had no problems with that. I've also seen people saying that 70/30 is ok, but it all depends on how thick the juice is. The reason for this is that there is very little room between the glass tube and the center chamber section on the Ammit. If the juice is too thick you may have air trapped in the juice flow holes and the juice will not reach your wick. As I said, I haven't tried anything over 60/40, which worked great, but I can see the speed of the bubbles is quite slow so I do believe that much thicker juice will be a problem. Not a big problem for me this, but something to be aware of especially if you need to vape high VG juices.

Performance

As I said, what happens on the deck in this atty is indeed magic in a way. I started out trying it out with my favourite juice, and it tasted absolutely fantastic on a .3 Ohm fused Clapton build hitting it with around 40 watts. Takes a while to warm up on the first draw but once the coil is preheated it's no problem. Right now I'm on a .8 Clapton on 30-35W and some great cinnamon roll juice (review will follow) and that also tastes absolutely fantastic if you ask me. This is definitely one of the best, if not the best, tasting single coil flavour chasing atties I've tried. I call it a flavour chasing atty cause that is what they have focused on here, but that doesn't mean it doesn't produce a decent amount of vapor as well, even on pretty low wattages. I am a bit surprised actually how fast my tank is emptied on such (relatively) low wattages. Then again, it only takes 3.5ml's of juice.

Again... performance wise this tank is just incredible. Tons of pure, delicious flavour.

Awesome! I'm impressed. It's ridiculously cheap as well to be honest. At around $25-30 most places it outperforms atties that will cost you twice as much if not more (NOK 299,- at nosmoke.no this week, usually 349,-). I guess I'll have to try out more GeekVape atties now...

Juice Review: Mount Baker Vapor flavour concentrates, Part 1

I have to admit that mixing my own e-juice haven't been a big part of my everyday vaping life. I mean I've mixed some concentrates with nic and pg/vg a few times, mostly cause I've gotten good deals on some of my favourite juices in concentrate form but usually I get my juice steeped and ready to vape. So far, my attempts to mix my own flavours have ended up tasting... well to be honest, soap would be the most describing word.

A lot of other people, with more time on their hands than I've had lately, are mixing their own flavours, sharing recipes and having a lot of fun with this. Others buy concentrates of more or less known juices, doing the mixing and steeping themselves to save money. It is indeed quite a bit cheaper than buying finished juice. Mixing your own juice from concentrates is also a good way to start if you want to get into mixing your own flavours.

As you might imagine, soap does not taste very good, so when Dampevarer asked if I wanted to try out and review some concentrates for them I thought it sounded just perfect for me. I get to do some mixing, and it's easy enough for me not to fuck up and get... well soap :)

Anyway, when I picked up the package with the concentrates in question, it was a lot bigger than I expected. Turns out they didn't just send me a few bottles, but rather a whole bunch of them, including no less than 15 from Mount Baker Vapor. So this concentrate mixing project of mine will actually be a series of reviews, starting off with the first 5 Mount Baker juices I tried out.

I've mixed all the juices at 6 mg/ml nicotine and 50/50 PG/VG, letting them steep for at least a week before I started trying out the first ones. I started out with some of the more fruity ones, as I do believe (after some googling) that dessert flavours, like custards and the like, benefit more from steeping so I'll leave those a bit longer. As for flavour strength I've been following the guidelines on the bottles, which for all the Mount Baker concentrates says 20%. This means you'll get 50 ml of finished juice from the 10 ml bottles that they use for the concentrates. Considering a bottle costs 49 NOK (which is like $6/£5) and the nicotine and pg/vg for a 50ml costs like a couple of dollars you end up with some pretty cheap juice.

So lets get on with the first 5 Mount Baker juices that I skill-fully created in my kitchen:

Apple rings

Tested on: Steamcrave Aromamizer Plus (Dual fused claptons @ 0.16 ohms, 100 watts)

This on is supposed to imitate sour apple ring candy rings. It does have a quite sweet apple smell, and the flavour is pretty accurate resembling apple candy, not real apples I'd say. I'm not sure I've tasted the exact candy they are aiming for here but it sure tastes just like I'd expect those rings in the illustration photo would taste like. It's a good juice that I've vaped all day. I'm not sure I'd vape it several days in a row though... I tend to get tired of these kinds of flavours, but that's just me. But great juice to pick up from time to time when you feel like vaping some apple candy flavour.

Pear

Tested on: Steamcrave Aromamizer Plus (Dual fused claptons @ 0.16 ohms, 100 watts)

I was a bit disappointed with this in the beginning. It wasn't that sweet pear flavour I expected. A bit too sour for my taste... kind of like a pear that should have been left for a couple of more days ripening before you ate it. And you know what... leaving it for a couple of more days, or weeks will probably help a lot for this juice as well. I had steeped it for just a week or so when I first tried it. Since I've been using a 10ml tank to test this, the juice just got better and better as the juice was left in the tank, constantly heated and then cooled off, which probably speeds up the steeping process quite a bit. It quickly got quite a lot sweeter and it is indeed a pretty authentic pear juice.


Thug juice

Tested on: Steamcrave Aromamizer Plus (Dual fused claptons @ 0.16 ohms, 100 watts)

Berries and melon, with a cool menthol finish... now we're talking. Before I tasted this juice the combination of berries, melon and menthol sounded like ... well, "ok" I guess. After tasting it... it sounds fantastic. What I'm trying to say is that I didn't expect that much from this juice, or to put it in another way, it wasn't on the list of the flavours that I've looked the most forward to trying out. But it surprised me by being bloody delicious. Never underestimate the power of fresh fruits and menthol, and try this one even if the description makes you go "meh".

Orange Dream Bar

Tested on: Steamcrave Aromamizer V2 (Dual claptons @ 0.4 ohms, 70 watts)

Supposed to be an orange creamsicle flavour. To be honest I am a bit confused about this. Every time I pick up the setup that I've used for this I'm not too happy with the first hits. I get kind of a bitter flavour like orange zest instead of the creamsicle flavour it is supposed to be. However, once I vape a bit on it the bitterness goes away (almost like the juice needs to be pre-heated) and it becomes much sweeter and better. I'm not sure I get the full creamsickle experience though. I've seen some other reviews that praise the accuracy of this vape so it might be my mix that is a bit off. Maybe it needs to steep some more or maybe another setup will get more out of it. Anyway, not my favourite so far this one.

Blue Moo

A quick google search reveals that this blueberry cream muffin juice is hated by some and praised by others. I'll admit I was a bit sceptical when I smelled this juice, fearing that those that claimed this tastes like butter was right. I did not get much blueberry when smelling it at least. Vaping it wasn't that bad  but certainly not good.... at first. I'm not really sure what happened, usually my juices taste best on a fresh wick, but this one was just strange. Might have been me having a bit of a cold at the time so my taste buds might have been all messed up. You see after a while when I picked up my setup again I started getting the blueberry, cream and muffin flavours from the description. On the inhale I get quite a lot of blueberry, and on the exhale it is accompanied by cream and muffin. I feel it keeps getting better and better, making me suspect I might have cracked the bottle a bit early. It's already a great juice in my opinion, but I'm looking leaving some ml's to steep for another week or as I suspect this will make it even better.

Out of the 5 juices I've reviewed here I'd definitely say that the Thug Juice was my favourite. The Blue Moo is still getting better and better and coming in second for now. Looking forward to see if any of the other 10 juice I still have steeping in a dark and smelly place will reach the top of the list.
